You can go to Gimhae, the city near Busan, by urban rail. You can use the urban rail for 1,200 won from the end of Busan to another end, or to Gimhae and Yangsan, differently from the countries that charge differently depending on the distance. It would be a touching path if you can take a seat on the urban rail. The light rail transit to Gimhae has a ground railway. You can see outside of the window as much as you want. While looking at the body of the urban rail making a big round turn, you would feel like you are on a train trip. Therefore, when you’re heading to Gimhae, take your eyes away from your smart phone and stare outside of the window. Let’s take a time trip to the symbol of Gaya culture, passing through Nakdonggang river, the wide farm in Gangseo-gu, and Gimhae. If Gyeongju stands for Silla, Gimhae is Gaya.
If you walk for about 10 minutes through the shopping street after getting off at the Royal Tomb of King Suro station, you can see the tomb. It is where the first King of Geumgwan Gaya is buried. He was born from an egg, and established the foundation of the multi-cultural family as marrying a princess from Ayuta(India). He is the progenitor of Gimhae Kim families, whose number is the biggest in Korea. He really was the progenitor of a huge family. Passing the big and high tomb, you reach the royal garden. Actually, this garden is the main point. Autumn. It must be autumn. You must visit the Royal Tomb of King Suro in autumn. Just say hello to the King born from the egg. There were the bodies buried alive with the King and grave goods in a stone chamber inside the tomb, but they were robbed during the Japanese colonial era. It’s heartbreaking to hear that we could not protect the tomb. So, you walk to the garden behind the tomb. Softly step on the fallen leaves, open a poetry book on the bench, and look around. You will realize how beautiful the place is. If you’re with a female friend or junior student from your school, seat her on the bench and take pictures of her with your heart and soul. No matter how you take the picture, it will turn out to be one of the pictorial magazine. Her heart turns out, too.
You reach Gimhae National Museum getting off at Museum station. It opens till 9 o’clock at night. If you’re tired of repeating the same dating course, the museum could be a good alternative. You can not only easily go to the museum by urban rail as it is directly connected but also enjoy the super-duper facility. Everyone who has visited there would agree. It is cool in summer and warm in winter. Gimhae museum is full of the relics of Gaya that are smaller and prettier than those of Silla you see in the text book. Some relics look very similar to the accessories today.
Those who remember the myth of King Suro born from the egg would better visit the place he arrived from heaven. In A.D. 42, 6 glittering eggs came down from the sky, and the first one came out of the egg was King Suro. The tombs of King and Queen Suro’s are about 10-minute apart from each other with Gujibong in between them. The park has become a gradual trail course. Gujibong is said to have a figure of 10 turtles’ heads clumped together. I can hardly say it really does, though. Anyway, this is the place ‘Gujiga’, the ancient song you may have learned in the text book was born. Turtle, turtle, your head... I would bake it. Whatever, Gujiga. Moreover, on the top of Gujibong is a dolmen. You can reach it if you stretch your hand. It is assumed to be the tomb of a headman back in B.C. 4th or 5th century. This stone-tomb looks more interesting than thinking about the man who came out of the egg, because it is said that Han Seok Bong carved the letter ‘Gujibong-seok’ on a stone at the top. The engraved letters are still clearly seen if you bend your body to see it closely. Well, this is the writing of the master calligrapher whose mother cut the rice cake and he wrote the letter... whatever, you can appreciate it.
Another 10 minutes of walk takes you to a large cultural center. Gimhae Arts and Sports Center. The video media center showing a free movie every Wednesday, and a free movie or animation for families on Saturday. You can rent the video studio, audio recording room, video workroom, multimedia classroom, and auditorium for certain amount of fee. It has facilities good enough to be the media center of Gimhae. The filming equipment required for movie shooting is also available for rental. They teach how to use the facilities like the studio or audio recording room in every semester.
It not only holds big performances, but also has a video media center and an ice rink. The future Kim Yuna are taking figure lessons. Once the vacation begins, the ice rink is full of children dreaming of the future Kim Yuna and cute couples. If someone falls down, another person comes and holds his hand. The obvious fact is, however, you have to practice on your own to improve your skating skill. Couples go to hell.
The final destination is Yeonji Park. This Yeonji Park is a lotus park you can hardly see in any other places in Busan. The park is full of lotus in summer. It is a so well-organized park that everyone in Gimhae regards the park as the best trail in Gimhae. In the center of the pond full of lotus, there are trees hung down with a fountain rising up into the sky. You can get a good picture from any angle. On summer nights, you can here the loud sound of frogs and crickets while walking around the park. The frogs were very common in the past, but now you can only hear them in Yeonji park. It is not usual to see the fancy Gaya relics, the museum and the ice rink at the same time. It’s only possible in Gimhae.
