In 2013, Songdo beach held an event for its 100th anniversary. The Japanese who had occupied Korea in 1910 realized the beauty of Songdo. The Japanese residents established ‘Songdo Amusement Co., Ltd’ and Changed Songdo into the beach and amusement park, which was the first beach in Korea, Songdo. After the War, due to the restaurants and lodges, the sea became muddy and the beach got narrowed. There remained the amusement park only, but the beach was well-restored and not is attracting many tourists. In fact, the post popular spot in Songdo was the rope bridge connecting the nearby ‘Turtle Island’ and Songdo beach. There are many middle aged people in their 50s and 60s to remember this bridge. My legs never stopped trembling while crossing the bridge taking him by the hand... Their stories would begin like this, the common love story in their youth. Isn’t it said that the girls and boys meeting on a shaking bridge would easily fall in love with each other.
In Songdo, the Ocean Art Festival is held in every fall. The installations making the best of the sea and beach are not just simple statues or sculptures. Some cammels going into the sea, a pair of the 7.5m-long three-black-and-white sleepers, the Goryeo celadon balloons taller than a person, the miniature of skyscraper sticked onto the beach, the dozens of bells swaying in the wind on the tip of the posts standing closely creating a forest. It is not difficult to meet art. Thanks to the works easy to understand and participate in, anyone can be satisfied with them during the festival.
Walking along the seaside trail from the beach, you can meet Amnam park connected to the sea. There are as many tourists as in the beach. Amnam park has two kinds of trails; the seaside trail and the trail going through the forest. It is good to walk through the forest taking the woods bath, many people also visit Amnam park to walk on the seaside trail. The parking lot is very unique as it is standing close th the beach. You can hardly see a parking lot whose edge is hit by the waves besides here. In addition, it is also popular for the parking fee cheaper than you think so don’t worry about the parking. The rails on the edge of the lot are always full of fishermen. You can easily catch the fish only by throwing the bait into the water, so the night fishermen always scramble to get the best seats. It is very unusual to see fathers fishing, and mothers and children enjoying their snack on a mat and sleeping at the cool place.
On the right side of the parking lot is full of temporary buildings selling the baked shell fish and seafood, but the last few remaining elderly haenyeo(female diver) still sell the seafood they caught under the water of Songdo on their own. It is not very unusual to see the elderly women in their diving suit with the net full of shell fish and octopus, leaving their wet foot steps in the Amnam park parking lot.
The solid seaside trail along the cliff gives you an experience to walk along the sea, but you may miss the naked sea in front of your eyes. No matter who made this, the amusement park is the amusement park, and the sea is the sea, making the visitors look for something more unique. However, the artworks of the Ocean Festival are playing the role nowadays. Anyway, Songdo is Songdo, the hidden spot where only few people know.
