Eat your breakfast early at dawn and go out. Take the line 1 urban rail. Take a seat somehow and put lip-balm so much that you might think that’s too much. Hold your bag tight and fall asleep leaning your head on the post. Deep sleep. After an hour of sleep, you reach Hadan station. Your lips are moist. This is the everyday morning of my junior who went to Dong-A University in Hadan from Jangjeon-dong for 4 years. Hadan. It even has the word ‘dan(end)’ in its name. It is the end of the river and the beginning of the sea at the same time. The end of the line 1, Hadan station. However, there is a treasure-like tourist spot spread endlessly along Nakdonggang river at Hadan station. It worths of the 1-hour long trip.
It is quite close from Hadan station to Nakdonggang Estuary Bank. Get out of the station to the opposite side of Hadan five-way intersection and walk toward the river. Then you reach Nakdonggang river as wide as Hangang river. The river born in Taebaeksan mountain traverses Korea and reaches the sea. In the center of the wide river is the island named Eulsukdo Island. Eulsukdo Island was created by the soil cultivated under the river. The both sides of the island are connected to the land by bridges.
Before the bridges were built, Eulsukdo Island was a hotel for migratory birds on the journey with the reeds and rich fish. The swan and the crane rested their tired wings between the reeds and ate fed themselves. The birds talks about the place when they meet other flocks of birds as flying toward to the warm land. There is a small island on the lower part of the river. A buffet is always prepared there! For a long time, Eulsukdo was heaven where the flocks of birds landing like clouds. On Eulsukdo, there are cultural center, habitat for migratory birds, small cafe named ‘Forest’, eco park and eco center.
Before crossing the bridge to Eulsukdo, drop by Naru-jeong in the corner and look at the island. As the riverside trail around Naru-jeong is only slightly higher than the river, so you could feel like you’re walking on the water. Check your destination at Naru-jeong observatory, and we move to Eulsukdo like a bird.
As soon as you cross the bridge, you reach the habitat for migratory birds. The birds once stopped coming after it had been developed to be the park, but now you can see the birds flying so close to the city thanks to the effort of many environment groups to restore the wetland. There are various facilities to see the birds at Nakdonggang Estuary Eco Center. You can watch the birds at the outdoor search point as well as telescopes and explanations about ecosystem of the wetland. Eulsukdo is the only place you can watch birds landing holding your lover’s hand and look around some parts of the wetland with telescopes. It is not usual to meet a wetland almost right after getting off at a station. You can also see some artworks created from ‘water’ at Nakdonggang river cultural center near the eco center. It is good for a family because there is a well-organized facility for children to play with. Like the birds rest their wings, you catch your breath here.
There is Eulsukdo Sculpture park beside the drive-in theater. Many people takes a picture with the sculptures children would like. The couples who enjoys walking under the sun also visit here. It is the main even of couples to take pictures. The dating is finally completed by uploading pictures on your facebook tagging your lover’s account. You can say it was a happy day with pretty pictures and completely forget about your argument.
Eulsukdo Culture Center completed in 2002, with the World Cup, has relatively low accessibility, but holds unique classic performances. There are other kinds of performances organized by citizens thanks to the cheap rental fee, too. You don’t really need to visit here unless there’s a performance you want to see, but you must go to Eulsukdo Eco Park. Other parks in Busan have a long and straight bike lane, but here, you have to ride a bike at a slow speed. You must. It has a 8km long curved unpaved roads without damaging any of the environment. You can pick any bike you want among the bikes for 1 person, 2 people, and 4 people.
Come back to Naru-jeong at sunset and walk on the riverside trail you saw when you began your course today. The sun setting over Nakdonggang river is especially red. The name of this road to walk facing the red sky is Noeulnaru-gil(Sunset river road). What a perfect name.
